The Pool – To Automate or Not to Automate

The Pool – To Automate or Not to Automate

Being a responsible pool owner requires a considerable amount of work and is even recognised as a full time job in many spas. There are daily testings, weekly testings, biocide addition, cleaning filters and various other pool maintenance tasks to perform. These are all vital jobs to ensure the safety and comfort of your bathers and swimmers.

Water Balance Hardness

Water Balance Hardness

Water hardness, also known as Calcium Harness or Total Hardness, is the final part of the Water Balance Triad. You may know that it has an effect on your pool but today we will discuss how and why it is so important.
The best analogy for the effect that neglecting calcium levels has on a pool is one that refers to cars.

The Pool – Total Alkalinity

The Pool – Total Alkalinity

In this post, we move on from pH to Total Alkalinity – the backbone of the Water Balancing Triad.

Total Alkalinity is the key to balancing your pH readings. You should have readings of between 80 – 120ppm (part per million) whenever you test your pool, spa or hot tub. By maintaining these level readings, you will maintain a stable pH and buffer out swings outside of the optimal 7.2 and 7.8 pH.

How to Balance PH

How to Balance PH

The ‘Water Balance Triad’ starts with the pH of your pool. The water used here should have a pH between 7.2 and 7.8. Ideally, your pool reading would be 7.4 which is the average pH of the human body. This reduces the risk of both skin and eye irritation.

Chlorine is an excellent sanitiser which has both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to pool, hot tub and spa use. Below we have listed some of the key factors to consider:

Calcium Hardness – The Solubility Controller

Calcium Hardness – The Solubility Controller

So far, we have discussed both pH, Total Alkalinity and how the two interact. This leads us on to our next subject – Calcium Hardness and it’s part in Water Balance.

All water has an intrinsic hardness to it. This refers to the amount of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, which can be found dissolved into it. Here in the UK, you can find all levels of hardness from very soft through to very hard. Check with your utility supplier to find out the level of water hardness you have in your area and be aware that it can vary from postcode to postcode.
