Essential maintenance and understanding of water chemistry of your hot tub include using spa water balancing chemicals
from time to time. Depending on the area you live in, your water source may have a high pH level or low pH level readings – both of which aren’t great for keeping your hot tub water fresh and clean.

Hot Tub pH Balance

For all your needs regarding pH in your hot tub, our team at SpaChem are here for you. We have a range of products that will help with a low pH reading or high pH reading that you may have from your hot tub water.

Our products are designed to keep the pH level stable and under control, so no matter your needs for pH balancers for your hot tub, rest assured that we have you covered. From pH plus to calcium hardness increase, we have everything you need to balance your water reading.

pH Balancing

It’s always great to understand what your incoming mains water pH range is, which becomes the baseline for your hot tub water balancing, pH balancing, and Total Alkalinity (TA) balancing and ultimately helps you land on the ideal ph range once you fill your hot tub.

Do a quick test to see where you stand with your hot tub pH levels:

  • Get a glass of water from your tap

  • Use a standard 3in1 or 6 in1 test strip

  • Dip test water – the ideal range is 7.2 – 7.8

  • Note down your incoming mains water from a pH & Alkalinity point of view in parts per million

These results give you your baseline line water reading and each and every time you complete a drain down and refill you immediately know the Total Alkalinity increaser action (your buffer) you need to take and your pH action with pH plus / pH Increaser or pH minus / pH Reducer.

The water in a hot tub requires different attention from regular water, and it is also different from pool water in a swimming pool pH setting. Due to the higher temperature of hot tub water, there are more necessary steps to take to ensure the water is appropriately sanitised.

Some of the effects of a water reading that has a pH reading that’s too high or low include:

  • Dry or itchy skin and irritating to eyes,

  • An increase of scale and erosion in your filter,

  • Cloudy water,

  • A strange smell,

  • Poor efficiency of your sanitiser,

  • Staining to the hot tub surface.

All of these should be avoided – both for the health of your hot tub and that of the people who use it.

To keep the pH of your hot tub water at a neutral level, use a high-quality balancer. SpaChem sells good quality pH plus for hot tubs and pH Minus Balancers for hot tubs in varying sizes from as small as 1 kg tubs for domestic use, and up to 7 kg containers for bigger jobs. Our water balancers can be used with either Bromine Granules, Chlorine Granules, Free Chlorine Environments, and all water sources from a borehole, spring water, and freshwater environments.

Here’s a summary on Total Alkalinity Increaser

We understand the importance of the pH levels being just right in your hot tub. Therefore, you will find several different water balancing and pH level related products. The one that is available on this page though is Total Alkalinity Increaser.

How do I understand Total Alkalinity Plus and Why Do I Need It?

  • This functions as a buffer for the water’s pH levels and enables you to control the levels better. Therefore, you should always give attention to the spa alkalinity before you start looking at the pH balancer levels.

  • Ideally, your hot tub should have an alkalinity value of around 80 to 120 parts per million ppm.

  • Using a standard 3in1 or 6in1 test strips will help you to understand your current water levels.

  • Anything that is a high alkalinity or low alkalinity value will mean that it will be harder to get the pH levels right.

  • As the total alkalinity of the hot tub water can change as you try to adjust your pH levels,

  • Therefore it is best to check the total alkalinity first and use a TA Raiser when needed

At SpaChem ™ we have an excellent Total Alkalinity enhancer known as Spa Total Alkalinity Plus or sodium bicarbonate which will increase the total TA in your spa or swimming pool water.  Our product is high grade and is very easy to use and extremely effective in bringing TA levels in your pool or spa to the correct range.

It’s also worth noting when adjusting your alkaline levels this can lead to slightly elevated pH scale, so bare this in mind when you go to see if you need a pH increaser.

Spa or pool Alkalinity Plus is available in single 1kg and 5KG quantities along with money-saving bulk-buy packages of 4 x 5Kg packs and 6 x 1Kg packs.

All SpaChem ™ Limited’s products are sourced or developed in the UK, so we can deliver what you need, when you need it, whether you are in Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Hot Tub Water Testing Kit

Your test strip will show the total hardness/calcium hardness. If this result is above the UK range, then there is a risk of scale forming and the water turning cloudy. Within our range, you will find a range of products that will balance your pH levels.

Adjust The Total Alkalinity

One of the main ways you can notice high alkalinity and pH of the water in a hot tub is if it’s cloudy water. Always test the alkalinity first with test strips. This should be between 80 and 120 ppm (parts per million). After this, you will be able to check the pH, if it shows high pH levels over 7.8 then this will also need to be balanced. Always focus on the total alkalinity first.

The chemicals you use are more than likely to be sodium bisulfate or muriatic acid. Upon completing the balance, you must follow the instructions from the hot tub manufacturer and the product you have used.
